In reply to Chihuahua Zero. My story is not so unusual, my case as you say, is most of us. Good luck with your endeavors. I hope your experience is all positive. But it's a tough world out there. I also don't feel that screwed. I got cover art for free. A laid out trade paperback for free. So getting it published, even for one year had advantages.

Seemed like you were really screwed over by traditional publishing in your case. It’s one reason why I’m considering all my options. Once I actually get my novel finished, I’ll try querying to publishers first, and then consider the self-pub route.

Hi Karen, I also published with Create Space and was very happy with the service. One of the most important aspects of self-publishing is social marketing. I spend hours networking and spreading the seeds- but it seems to work! Good Luck!

Welcome to the new world of publishing, Karen. Blink and it changes. And as the doors of traditional publishing grow narrower with fewer authors able to squeeze through, writers are still becoming more and more empowered through Print On Demand and eBook opportunities. Indie Authors are the new pioneers of publishing — we’re all making it up as we go along. Congratulations on taking the steps to publish your own book while remaining open to all traditional opportunities. And for your willingness to learn and implement the marketing pieces, too. It’s all part of the new way. As you know, you need those tools now whether you publish yourself –or go with a traditional publisher. Wishing you much joy in the process.

Great post, Karen. I am going to self pub a short story collection later in the year – if it’s hard to get an agent interested in a novel, what would it be like for an anthology from an unknown? – and thanks to people like you who have lit the way, I’m feeling OK about it.
