Until very recently, every short story I attempted to write begged to be a novel. I was under no illusion that I needed to master shorts first, I just wanted to do so. It wasn’t until I began to read a lot of short stories that I understood why I hadn’t been able to put one together. It was because I never read them; I’d only focused on reading novels.

I belong to a local writers’ guild and we host short story/essay contests monthly. In 2016, I challenged myself to enter every single contest – about 9 of them. Because I’d been reading shorts, I ended up winning either a 1st, 2nd, 3rd place or an honorable mention on 7 stories. I repeated that challenge in 2017 with the same results.

I know consider myself someone who can craft both novels and shorts. Each has their own attraction for me. I love them for different reasons.

There is a fine line on writing styles that I like. Personally if I am reading a fiction then I like to read chapters ect. novel styles. But right now I have started the year by reading memoirs, I prefer them to be written more in a poem, short essay style for each story in them. A great example is my current read, Song of Praise for a Flower by Fengxian Chu. Not to mention, but I will, her story is amazing.
