hi,
could you please tell me some English novels that have largely portrayed muslim women in such stereotypical manners. there are a lot of them out there i know, but I want a suggestion for texts by reputable European or British writers. this is for academic purpose, please respond. i’ll really appreciate your suggestion.

thanks

I think this is the challenge for all fiction writers–coming up with authentic & interesting characters without resorting to stereotypes.

One thing I’m so tired of is the Muslim woman who is oppressed or in distress & needs to be rescued. So over-done.

Thanks for your sharing your thoughts, Zvezdana. Lots to think about here.

My favorite part would definitely be the idea of leaving preconceived notions behind – we think that we know everything when in reality, much of what we know is dictated by a very skewed media. I would advise anyone writing a character with a specified religious background to have a deep understanding of the religious text lest they make a faulty mistake or worse, contribute to the incorrect way that their readers perceive people of a different class/race/ethnicity/religious background/etc. I also loved the point about Muslim women having sensual encounters with other characters. Many times women from other cultures have their sexualities defined by people from the outside (the fiery Latina, the “freaky” Black woman) and women in Muslim cultures tend to be de-sexed, as if they have no sexuality at all by default. Writing is definitely a great way to debunk these sorts of myths.
