Sometimes I give in totally to the rejections. I’ll pore over them and denigrate myself and wallow in depression. That usually lasts a day. Getting it all out like that, touching the sore and appreciating the pain, seems to free me for another few months of endeavor.

But, oh…that marvelous feeling when something’s published! It’s worth every bit of the pain.

Plus, I just plain love writing. I think if I were in a cave with no outside contact at all, I’d still scratch out stories with a stick.

Never give up. Just do a periodic flushing out of the rejection reservoir.

Loved your article!

And you are absolutely right – all you can do (and must do) is keep going, keep writing, keep ‘fishing’ as you put it. Someone once said that the cream eventually goes to the top, just as good writing eventually will be recognised. Clearly there is also an awful lot of bad writing being published out there, making it all the more frustrating. But judging by your article, clearly you are a good writer and you WILL get there. I was in a very similar boat to you. See: http://rebeccastonehill.com/the-poets-wife/thoughts-rejection/

I’ll just say that I really enjoy your writing, myself. In particular, I like what you write about your faith and your daily work with it in, well, daily life.

I consider you the best writer on faith and spirituality I’m reading today. Much as I like someone like Pema Chodron or even Thomas Merton, your writing speaks to the reality of the struggles of faith in a world of children, bills, breakfast/lunch/dinner, and work in a way no one else I’ve read does.

It helps that I’m also interested in the Orthodox path (which is what drew me to your book).

My point of view is that it indeed them and not you. What you offer is special and may not be appreciated by everyone. But it’s valuable nonetheless. Please don’t listen to the rejection slips, listen to those who respond to what you have to say and say in turn very clearly: more please.

Thank you for all you do.
