You might be interested in this FB group in support of older women writers. It’s a place to showcase work. It’s also a supportive community, but the emphasis is on showing off one’s writing.

There is also a related “directory” of authors in which you can be listed (no monetary involvement!), this is searchable by genre.

Kate,

There are so many options now for publishing, and self-publishing is one of them. It just depends on how comfortable you are taking complete control of your book. I’m not of that ilk. Both of my books are with small publishers and that suits me just fine.

Fantasy is a huge genre right now, so I wouldn’t let that hold you back. And certainly not your age! The book is what counts, not your age. No one asked how old I was before publishing my books. Just do it! As long as you’re prepared for the trials and tribulations of getting and being published, you’ll come out happier in the end. Best of luck!

Still the Lucky Few? I saw your post and really smiled for the first time in days. I am 66 going on forty and although I’ve been writing for a long, long time, I never tried very hard to get published. Now I am considering self-publishing and would love to hear your opinion. I want to start a website and blog and am so excited but….something is holding me back. I think I’m scared because I don’t think anyone wants to read a fantasy book about fairies and elves and dragons and magic from a woman my age. I am so proud of you for accomplishing so much with your writing. You go, girl!

Amanda,

Thanks so much for taking the time to check it out and leaving a response. I truly believe every word I wrote and yes, “age sweetens the cup for writers” is so true. All those years of life experience spill out on the page in some way, shape or form. C

Such a positive way to look at aging and a testament to the motto, “You are only as old as you feel/act.” In my opinion, age sweetens the cup for writers. The more experiences you have, the more you can add depth to your work. Keep on writing:)

Although I’ve got a nagging ache of arthritis in the base of my right thumb, I’m writing more than ever! I indie-published my first novel, Fred’s Funeral, last December, and I’ve got several more in the works.
It’s an exciting time to be launching a new career. I’m several years away from full retirement but I’m looking forward to devoting all my time to writing, publishing, and helping others with their writing.
Your book sounds intriguing. I’ll be sure to download a copy. All the best!

My life has been a lot like yours in many ways. I married too early, had children late in life. and now have an elderly mother with children still at home. It has slowed me down, but hopefully one day I will accomplish my goal of writing a book. Thank you for giving me hope.

Mary Ann, I think I need a T-shirt with that motto “It’s never too late to make a better choice.” Thanks for that.

Yes, ageism is alive and well, though less so in publishing than in many other fields. Keep writing about it and increasing awareness!
