I feel the same way about gratuitous sex and vulgarity that are otherwise unnecessary to a particular story. I don’t enjoy reading it, and therefore did not want to write it.

I’m having trouble finding an agent for my crime fiction, despite those who’ve read it commenting that the writing is impeccable and they hope to see the story in print one day. I wonder if this is partly due to my leaving much to the imagination when it comes to those more provocative themes. However, I started writing seriously in mid-life, and I agree with you–at this stage of the game there’s a level of self-acceptance, comfort in one’s own skin, that allows us to stay true to our own writing style, regardless of what’s selling at any given time.
