He thought it would be dreadful, as we aren’t allowed in public for one week a month (traditional in rural India, hard for us to get our head round), but we agreed that women rulers would spend more time drinking tea than dropping bombs, which would be good for the tea industry in India!

My father was always interested in find out more about everything. He was a numismatist and amateur historian particularly beguiled by ancient civilisations. My mother was a geography teacher, so from both sides of the family, curiosity was encouraged and answered. We were never discouraged to make connections, however unorthodox.

This is probably why I loved the whole concept of alternate history; although there is structure, the ideas have no limit.
