We have to tell a true story without notes in 5 minutes. We agree a topic for each meeting, e.g. Revenge, Abroad, Fear. This usually triggers a memory and several of us who are also writers find the results feed into our writing. Quite a few of my stories have been incorporated in my novels.

I have many memories I plan to incorporate into my future novels. One in particular will include the sights, sounds, and smells of my great-grandmother’s kitchen. When we stayed there over the holidays, I tried to wake up first to join her in the kitchen. I can still hear her scooting around in her slippers, and smell the aroma of coffee, boiling oatmeal, and toast warming my senses. It was a tiny kitchen, and one of the comforting fixtures of my childhood and teen years that were otherwise chaotic in the aftermath of my parents’ divorce.
