One thing that prepared me for it was watching TV shows with ensemble casts, especially soap operas. When I was a teenager, the CBS soaps had a head writer named Douglas Marland. I learned a lot about character development from him. Another influence was the original Canadian teen TV series “Degrassi Junior High” (which changed its name to “Degrassi High” in later seasons as the main characters grew older). That program centered around several different characters; almost every viewer could relate to at least one of those kids.
