It’s something I can’t not be. Luckily for me, I have a pension and so can write what I want and need to rather than have to keep an eye on what pays. Like Anne I doubt I’ll ever be famous, but I would like more people to read my books, so that my stories are shared. To add to the mix, I enjoy the workshops, the literary events, readings etc, but am not prepared to spend too much of writing time of them.

Thank you for this beautiful reminder. For me, writing well is also my primary goal—and pushing myself to do better. It’s hard sometimes with so many distractions and so many pulls in different directions. Today I re-introduced myself to someone I haven’t seen in probably 10 years, and she said Oh yeah the writer! I was so pleased by the moniker (esp. because I don’t think I had published anything yet when I last saw her). We are writers because we write, not because we publish or don’t publish, market or don’t market, go on book tours or stay at home and read. It’s a beautiful, frustrating, heartening, exciting profession.
