Thanks, Judester. Sarah really is amazing. I’m in awe of her. She is an inspiration to me, for sure.

And that is so true about it being difficult also because the abuser is someone who is loved by the victim. I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment.

You said “Someone tells you something often enough, and you start to believe it.” Can you imagine if that ‘someone’ is the person you believe is ‘the one’. I admire anyone who survives something like that. Sarah sounds like an amazing woman!

I love the idea that you ventured to write one book, stayed true to the characters and came out with such a brilliant message. That’s awesome!!!

Thank you for the comment, Kimberly.

That feeling of inferiority, or that the abuser has the right to treat the victim that way somehow, that is something I have seen so many times. Interestingly, it was also one of the things I think people had a hard time understanding about Lilly–why she would believe that after getting away from Charles. It’s a brainwashing of sorts, I suppose. Someone tells you something often enough, and you start to believe it. Even if it is a bunch of lies designed to control you.

I’m so glad you loved the book. Thank you very much for commenting.

Thank you, Rachelle. It’s strange because I really didn’t understand what I had written until coming to the editing process and getting a few opinions. I truly thought I was just writing a romantic suspense novel about a woman I wanted to read about. I knew her story was important, but I never thought of it as writing about abuse. If that makes any sense at all.

I’m glad you think it does a good job of bringing this problem to attention though. It is an important issue. Oh, and I’m so pleased you like Zach. He is a doll!

I loved your book and I like that you slowly have your protagonist, Lilly, gaining strength and growing to feel that she is worthy of love. I’ve also known victims of domestic violence and what always surprises me most is that the abused partner feels inferior to or unworthy of her abuser, and has grown to believe that somehow he has the right to treat her that way. Thanks for raising these tough issues in your article – and your book!

I’m glad you didn’t make that change because ultimately you helped people who never experienced domestic violence to empathize with those who have. You have enough suspense and tension going to keep the reader wanting to find out what happens, and as an added big bonus, you have the hunky Zach to keep everyone interested. 🙂
