I’m afraid I don’t know all the DR blogs. But the DR society is good http://dorothyrichardson.org/index.htm

Hi Simon, many thanks for your words and great to hear about your Dorothy reading experience! The best biography I found is by Gloria G. Fromm and it’s called ‘Dorothy Richardson: a biography.’ It contains some commentary on Pilgrimage. Best wishes

Just finished the 13 novels (in the 4 volume American Signet edition, complete with wonderfully trashy Harold Robbins style populist covers, a tenner on Amazon after seeing those Virago prices) and still float on those faultlessly long sentences. There doesn’t seem to be any moment where the writing dips, unlike Proust who gets a little dull temporarily here and there. And not sure you make enough of the simple glaring fact that her relative obscurity is surely down to class above all; not sure about May Sinclair, but Ginny was certainly totally posh (aka inherited wealth); and as we know, art belongs to the posh, generally, and sad to say. One major pleasure of DR as opposed to equally brilliant Ginny, is that there’s never the sense of these servants clearing up after the characters, and by extension, clearing up after the author; instead, Miriam’s rapture takes place in a tiny unheated room off Gower Street.
But I really meant to ask, what’s the best DR biog? Is the Forgotten Genius a good one? I’m after one with a good lot of Lit Crit I guess, and have been browsing the web for guidance; so thought you might know,
since I’m sure your book will have been fully researched

Thanks for your nice comment, Annabel. The comparison with Joyce is interesting. He was in my mind while I was writing, but to include him would have needed another whole article! I am looking forward to reading your novel, The Joyce Girl.

Your comments about why this didn’t happen to VW are very perceptive. Joyce, who wrote similarly challenging prose, has become a legend not necessarily because of his greater talents but because of the huge support he received and it’s interesting to also compare him with DR. Well done for rescuing DR from the margins of history.
