My debut novel is set in St. Louis and the surrounding area, where I’ve lived since 1986. I did that purposefully because I was intimately familiar with the area and knew I could bring it alive on the page. I’ve had readers say they want to make a list of all the places I mention (I used real places in almost every setting) and visit each one. I didn’t feel I could do that with NY, where I’ve never even been. Now that I have more experience under my writing belt, I write about other places, but am more drawn to southern my roots. My current WIP is set in a fictional small town in South Carolina. Although I’ve never been there either, I’ve learned how to research. Plus I have a friend who spent many years there and he’s keeping me real.
