Yes! My takeaway is, there’s no hard and fast rule for when to close a thread, because the starting and continuing and revealing are what makes chapters feel deep.

Hi Abigal! Thanks for stopping over from the Deb Ball! I’m thinking of a book I recently read and some threads pulled throughout the whole story, while others only spanned a few chapters before they were resolved. So I’d say, some threads will close. Others will begin. Those can be carried on. But the point of the 3×3 rule, in my mind at least, is to have them overlapping and building. Even in my final chapter of my own book, I began a thread that allows the reader to imagine how the characters continue beyond the book. I hope that makes sense 🙂

I followed a link here from Debutante Ball. I really like the idea of this as a way to make sure one’s chapters are layered, but I did wonder at point you should start resolving threads? If I start two new threads in every chapter, won’t I eventually have so many threads going that I end up with a tangled ball of yarn? (I haven’t tried applying this to my manuscript, so it’s possible I already have that many threads going and just haven’t realized it.)
