Hi Karen and thanks for reading/commenting! If you ever want some more personalized Twitter help, please feel free to email me at alison.walkley@gmail.com. As far as hashtags go, they are really just a means of searching. If you want other writers to see your tweets, you’d use a hashtag like #writing or #amwriting.

I definitely see your point about traditional publishers and royalty sharing v. the indie route. It is definitely getting easier to market yourself as an indie author at this point, though the traditional pubs have much more money to put into PR packages. It’s a toss-up!

Even though I have an account, I find it quite confusing. I haven’t figured out how to make the most of it. Didn’t really understand the hashtag thing. I will investigate further after reading your blog. But I have to interject one thing here. I had an indie publisher but she closed after one year, and I then had to self-publish (which now I believe is also considered indie publishing). Many small publishers do not have a good track record of staying in business, so it is a crap shoot. My publisher at least gave me all the files, so doing it on my own was scary but doable. Now, I have a second novel, and if I can’t get a top-notch literary agent or NY publisher, (and I can’t), then why share the royalties and possibly be left out in the cold anyway?

It’s good to know you were able to meet Rocket Science through Twitter..
Self-publishing or indie publishing really needs hardwork advertising your book but you will be compensated in the long run..

Thank YOU, Anora! This is such a great site, connecting female writers as you do. I hope to be much more involved moving forward. Thanks again! – Alison “A.J.” Walkley

I believe I first learned of you many months ago related to your social justice project, so am glad you finally got to participate. Your story is very helpful as you share the details of two publishing methods. I find the before and after images of your Queer Greer cover especially useful and fascinating. What a compelling cover the new one is. And the first one was attractive too, but has a little of the self-published look.

Thanks too for sharing some specific tips about how Twitter has helped you. That’s adding value for those who come after you. Here’s wishing you tremendous appreciation for your books. – Anora

As one who is about to e-publish my first novel, I’m fascinated by the ways other writers go about publishing books and I enjoy reading of the success of others. I love twitter too and will go and tweet this page now as I’m sure others would like to be encouraged.
